CODEPENDENCY
Codependency refers to a dysfunctional, one-sided relationship, in which one person relies upon the other for almost all of their emotional needs and for their sense of self-worth. It can also describe a relationship in which one person acts as an enabler, and – consciously or not – helps the other person remain stuck in, or complacent about, negative patterns such as irresponsible, addictive or underachieving behavior. The codependent sufferer will tend to project their tendencies on other people outside of their relationship, and this often taints their connection with society at large. For example, a core characteristic of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a sense of identity.
